THE MARIAL EVE MAHER INTERVIEW

Marial Eve Maher must get bored easily cause she seems to have her hands in everything. And I guess you could say she is an artist in every sense of the word cause everything she does seems refined.  She wears many hats and thus why Lindsay Sherwin created many looks for this shoot.

TRA: Have you ever sat down and made a list of things you love?

Marial: Actually, yes.

That’s weird.

TRA: Why is it weird?

Marial: About every fifteen minutes, I write “to do” lists. And everything on that list - is what I love… does that count?

TRA: Absolutely…sort of. I have never actually sat down and written this list out until today. I assume it will be a never-ending list cause that seems to be how lists go.

Marial: It would not be called a “list” if there were an end.

TRA: Well usually I throw them away is my point I guess.

First thing on my list were old beat-up classic trucks. What do you think about that?

Marial: Beat-up classic trucks? I love them. I actually asked my dad, jokingly, for a 1986 Dodge Ram…

 He got it for me.

TRA: SO WHERE IS IT?!

Marial: It’s in Rhode Island getting tuned up.

It’s my beach truck.

TRA: I love having a beach truck. I spent an entire summer in Apalachicola riding around in an old Defender. Can’t really top that.

Marial: Apalachicola? Did you just make that up?

TRA: Ha. No. It is very real and very amazing. I plan on building a house on one of my family’s lots down there one day. That is the dream. What is your ultimate dream?

Marial: Dude.

Next question please.

TRA: Ha. Why? I see you back in Rhode Island cruising around in your 86’ Dodge Ram for sure.

Well fine…let’s talk about how you plan on getting there…

Marial: I will definitely be back in Rhode Island, and building a house on my parent’s lot. I didn’t want to seem like I copied you.

TRA: You are young, talented, and beautiful. Who did you piss off? Why are you not conquering the art world right now? You could probably get anything you ask for so why not ask?

Marial: I actually pissed myself off - because I allowed myself to get stuck behind a desk…I am doing what I can to stay as involved in the art world - and am pretty successful within my boundaries.

And now, finally at 25 - things are going to change - and I am getting more hands on…

I finally asked - and got what I wanted.

Didn’t realize it was so easy.

TRA: Well that is good. I was just about to suggest that you work on getting fired so you can struggle and be uncomfortable.

I feel like that is half the battle with creating…you have to be under the gun.

Marial: I suppose struggle and uncomfort is something I have never experienced.

And I am ready for that now.

TRA: Well for me personally I hate being comfortable. I am always looking over my shoulder waiting for the other shoe to drop. Whenever things are going too smoothly something serious comes along and kicks me in the face

Marial: I have been comfortable ever since I have been in New York City. And with comfort - there is routine and prediction. I really hate those two things.

I know what is going to happen, every day of my current life.

TRA: Yeah. That sounds like death to creativity. But you have a ton of cool stuff going on: your photography, your t-shirts (which I love by the way…I gotta get one), and now this collective that you are a part of fascinates me. Is there any one area where you are going to focus or do you always have multiple projects?

Marial: I always have multiple projects - because it comes along with my love of collaborating. But right now, my focus is music!

Which is exciting because it’s new - and it’s something I have never really pursued until now.

TRA: See you have so much shit going on I forgot about your music.

So I guess you find inspiration through all of your projects and all of your projects contribute creatively to each other? If that makes any sense…

Marial: Yes more or less. I mean, I discovered that I loved photography through making t-shirts (because I had to photograph them for promotion)…Now I focus most of my time on photography.

Note: I do not want to be making t-shirts for the rest of my life. That is NOT my dream.

TRA: Don’t hate on the bread and butter.

Like Fabulous says…if you’re making money just throw it in the bag.

Marial: Ha!

TRA: Surprisingly you can learn a lot from rappers and apply their teachings to your own situations.

Marial: So…maybe before I start working on my own record…I should listen to Lil Wayne? Would that be a good choice?

TRA: An excellent choice.  Lil Wayne is not a rapper. Lil Wayne makes God blush.

Marial: I like that.

TRA: Put that on a shirt!

How would you describe your music? Do you think I would hate it? Is it in your face?

Marial: My music journey has just started. I have been sitting down with a great producer - and my music will be influenced by the Krautrock era: Liquid Liquid, ESG, and Suicide. The music will be in your face - but in a good way. You will either want to dance to my music - or wanna get laid.

TRA: I like what I am hearing. I am not advising you get naked to sell records or anything but you should definitely use what you got. I hate those artists that exude sexiness and just cover it up cause they want their music to “speak for itself”…just saying.

Side note* I don’t know shit about the music industry.

Marial: Did you not see my “Going Out West” video? I am prett-ttty sure I made a nude cameo in that. Innocently.

I actually really love getting naked for the sake of art - and other things.

It’s seriously so much fun.

TRA: As long as the people getting naked are pleasant to look at I have no issues with that. It’s these animals involved with nudist colonies and shit that you have to watch out for. Holy celluloid.

And when I say animals; I mean human beings.

Marial: Yeah, I don’t know much about the colonies…Maybe I should start my own nudist colony…right here in NYC.

There will be requirements.
